Hurray! It’s yet another blow to the terrorists!! The sophisticated weapons seized from terrorists (who ransacked Mumbai on November 26) will be handed over to the brave commandos of the Mumbai Police after the 26/11 trial… So the next time terrorists hit Mumbai, they might get a taste of their own weapons!
The city police has decided that the 10 AK 47s, ten 9-mm handguns and hundreds of bullets recovered from the 10 Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists who attacked Mumbai on November 26 would go to their armoury, once the trial is complete. They will be handed over to crack teams set up specially to tackle incidents such as 26/11.
The terrorists were also carrying over 100 grenades, several magazines (containing bullets) and about 1,500 bullets. The police and the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS) recovered hundreds of bullets, over 40 grenades and the guns. All have distinct markings of companies based in Pakistan and constitute crucial evidence of that country’s role in 26/11.
AK-47s needed for the sensitive trial
An officer involved in the probe said, “It is a very sensitive case, with a lot of international attention. We have been told by the home ministry to submit the charge sheet as soon as possible. It should happen in the next few weeks. The trial of (the lone captured terrorist) Ajmal Amir Qasab is expected to be fast-tracked. It should be over within a year, as the case is very simple and straight-forward. The weapons will be produced as evidence. Once the trial is over, they could be handed over to the police armoury.”

The AK-47 is considered one of the most user-friendly but lethal weapons in the world and the Mumbai police could do with such weapons. A senior police officer said, “In India, a major source of AK-47s is through seizures from terrorists across the country, including Jammu & Kashmir. These AK-47s are given to crack teams in urban areas or police units in Naxal-infested regions.” A fresh coat of paint, at times a mere polish, is enough to make an AK-47 appear brand new. The recipients would never know where the weapons came from.
