It’s out now… Indians are having less of sex, despite a far more open & liberal sexual environment in today’s societies. These astonishing results are revealed by the Outlook-Moods Sex Survey 2008. The comparison is made between figures for 2008 and those for 1996 (when Outlook first carried out this ambitious groundbreaking survey). The frequency to have sex & the time for which couples engage in foreplay has come down in 2008 as compared to that in 1996. The reasons are many: both partners engaged in full-time jobs, spending more time outside home (i.e. office, travelling), higher stress levels, worrying about pink slips, home loans, terrorism, etc. etc. I am presenting excerpts from this survey. Note that I have clicked (only interesting) pictures using my cell phone, so the quality obviously is not great. You can read the full article in great details in Outlook magazine’s January 26 issue.

(- Figure 1 -) This came as a shocker for me. It clearly indicates that Indians are desiring more of sex and often one/both partner(s) are left un-satisfied (i.e. they don’t reach orgasm). The survey indicates that only 56% of both partners are happy with the act, as compared to 68% in 1996. In fact, 12 times a month is how frequently couples have sex today, as against 14 times in 1996!(- Figure 2 -) The preference for the time to indulge in sex has also changed considerably. As this figure shows, the preference for morning “shift” has doubled for men. However, men still initiate most of the sex and spontaneous sex has increased from 13% to 22%. |
In yet another shocking revealation, 52% of women indulge in oral sex at their man’s request, while only 40% of men perform it. However, 43% think it is dirty and 40% think it is harmful for them.
(- Figure 3 -) More men (17%) than women (6%) are in favour of multi-partner sex, most in the below-25 age group. Couples who watch TV or read books after sex now increasingly involve themselves in caring activities like kissing their partner. However, holding each other still tops the list with 42% prefering it.
(- Figure 4 -) It is quite shocking to learn that 80% of the respondents feel that society is more liberal in discussing sex but nearly 50% refrained from even talking about it.
